The c-ton® technology

The c-ton® technologycreates concrete products that fully offset the greenhouse gas emissions generated during production. The technology enables sustainability innovation in the core business by offsetting 100% of the emissions from production and input materials, including emissions from the cement, within the company's own production.

By storing the carbon in the product, the concrete products become permanent carbon sinks. The use of a recognized carbon capture technology ensures that an innovative CO₂-storing raw material is used for concrete production instead of external offsetting. The patented c-ton technology thus combines climate protection with modern and creative design options in gardening and landscaping.

CO₂ certificates are generated through the use of carbon capture technology. These are not placed on the certificate market but are set aside. In this way, we ensure that 100% of the carbon sink is credited to the products.

By adding technical carbon, a CO₂ saving of 100% is achieved compared to the reference product. In addition to the significantly improved environmental balance, the c-ton products are in no way inferior to their reference products in terms of workability, resilience and durability. They meet the standard specifications and are fully recyclable at the end of their product life.

Technical Carbon

Technical carbon is obtained as a by-product of renewable energy generation from biogenic waste streams, such as forest residues, using the pyrolysis process. The waste streams carbonized under low-oxygen conditions fix the CO₂ in solid form. In contrast to incineration or decomposition, the CO₂ that the plants have extracted from the atmosphere during their growth is not released again. Incorporated into building materials, permanent carbon sinks are created. The CO₂ remains permanently bound in the materials, even in the recycling phase at the end of the product's life.

Optimization of the TechnicalCarbon

The c-ton technology is based on innovative formulations with the addition of the additive Clim@Add® from CarStorCon Technologies.
The additive is based on technical carbon and was optimized for use in concrete blocks as part of our development work.
Extensive research and development work preceded the market launch. In particular, we successfully combined our expertise in the areas of raw material optimization, the treatment of technical carbon and the incorporation into concrete products.

Negative Emission Technology

Biochar Carbon Removal (BCR) technology is a negative emissions technology recognized by the IPCC. In order to achieve the global climate targets, carbon removals are needed worldwide in addition to massive emission reductions. By 2050, we need to remove 10 GT of CO₂ per year from the atmosphere worldwide. The construction industry in particular, which makes a huge contribution to the greenhouse gas effect, needs new decarbonization solutions. Biochar Carbon Removal (BCR) technology can already be used today, the technology and applications are ready for the market and can be scaled decentrally. No additional energy is required; on the contrary, the process generates renewable heat and energy.

c-ton® technology on the market

The result of several years of research and development cooperation between the partners is impressive: With c-ton® QUADRO, AHE Verbundsteine Betonwaren GmbH is now on the market with a concrete block that offsets the emissions of all the materials used in the concrete and the entire production process and also actively stores CO₂ and permanently removes it from the atmosphere.
The c-ton® QUADRO in the color anthracite with the dimensions 30 x 20 x 8 cm is the first product variant of its family, further formats are planned for 2025.

This makes AHE the first partner to implement c-ton® technology in a product. With the Concrete Innovation Group, we want to make this possible for other manufacturers.
